lol religion

an antitheist's guide to life

Don’t ever say that the Ten Commandments are the foundation of our laws.

  • Having other gods is not illegal
  • Graven images are not illegal
  • Taking the name of god or Jesus in vain is not illegal
  • Not “keeping the sabbath holy” isn’t illegal
  • Disliking your parents/treating them badly isn’t illegal
  • Adultery isn’t illegal
  • Lying isn’t illegal
  • Coveting isn’t illegal.

“Thou shalt not kill” is the only principle that, in our society, applies. I think it’s quite an overstatement to say that our laws are founded on the Ten Commandments when only 1/10 is used.

Do not say you’re part of a faith, but then say that you hate religion

Just by saying you’re a person of faith towards any particular belief, you are immediately still giving credit to whatever dumbed-down version of religion you’re a part of.

For example, just by putting on the census that you’re Christian, or professing a belief in Jesus as your “Lord and saviour”gives more power to the institution you hypocritically announce that you hate.

Let go of the mythology already.

bb-goose:

Well one thing that’s not going to be horrible for sure is ridiculing and calling “vile” religious minorities

Because that never happens to them usually, so it would be an interesting change of pace

I did not call the minorities vile. I will still fight for their rights to a freedom of religion and freedom of belief.

But I will not support their beliefs. That’s the key there: beliefs. Not people. I am in no way calling the people vile. I am calling what they believe vile - because I am sure the last time I checked, genocide, genital mutilation, child slavery, rape, murder, torture, etc. are all despicable acts.

And I don’t care if they “don’t support that stuff” or not. They are still part of the religion that holds it in its doctrine.

Next time, read before you reply.

When a religious individual says to me “but you can’t judge [my religion] based on [extremist group]”

I just want to stop them and say, “I don’t care. You get your morality from the same source material. Just because you interpret that source material less literally than they do does not make the belief system based on the material any less vile, despicable or worthy of ridicule.”

lol, the previous post was a week ago.  did it take you that long to come up with this spiel that completely misses the point?

this isn’t about your concept of sin and whether or not you agree with it.  this is about how you sound like every single other ignorant christian-raised atheist - you were never taught anything about any other culture or religion beyond your own, you never bothered to learn once you dropped religion, and as a result you think all religions function and are treated in society like christianity.

i’m just going to leave the “i am not prejudiced” paragraph up because it’s hilarious.

First of all, I do not check this tumblr account regularily, so I just noticed it now.

Secondly, I fail to see how it misses the point. You were comparing my post to the “love the sinner, hate the sin” concept of Christianity. I was merely clarifying the post further. Though, I do suppose you thought you had “got me” or caught me in some kind of demonstration of hypocrisy. I gave the second post as an explanation that it was not the case.

Thirdly, I was raised as an atheist - not in any religion. I made a point to try to look into religions, but they are quite frankly a load of shit. So please do not make assumptions about my background.

And my point about despising religion: I firmly believe that no good has ever come out of religion that could not otherwise be done without it.

As for the tags, I never compared you to a white supremacist. I do not know who you are or where you got that idea from. I simply responded to the post using white supremacists as an example of someone who I believe has vile beliefs, yet respect their right to having an opinion.

Please try not to get offended so easily. This is the internet.

Also, could you explain what exactly about the last paragraph you find so amusing?

While I must respect Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. individually, I do not and will not respect the beliefs for which they stand. The doctrines are vile, despicable and primitive and the world would be better off without them.

so what you’re saying is…

love the sinner, hate the sin?

I suppose at a glance, one could relate the two together, but there are some distinct differences.

“Sin” (a concept I do not believe in) is dictated by God. It does not matter what is actually detrimental to individuals’ minds/bodies - it is only a matter of what God says is right and what is wrong. This differs with my ideals in the sense that we know that the atrocities committed by religion are very real and very dangerous and not arbitrarily selected by a higher power to be deemed “wrong”.

Secondly, I am not prejudiced. I respect the rights for people to have their beliefs (as the same would go for, say, white supremacists). However, I do not respect the beliefs themselves. In fact, I entirely despise the beliefs of the Abrahamic religions and sincerely believe that they cause nothing but harm in modern society.

While I must respect Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. individually, I do not and will not respect the beliefs for which they stand. The doctrines are vile, despicable and primitive and the world would be better off without them.
